History

Mahaulpatha Sri Nigrodharama situated in Kinigama Mahaulpatha Village in Bandarawela is a place, which moulds the characters of people in a religious and moral manner. In this respect this temple can be called the present Devrum Temple.
The temple has achieved this credit due to immense dedication and devotion mingled with heart-felt desire and the devotee’s veneration towards the upliftment of the temple so as to cater to the religious needs of the people concerned. The temple along with all the devotees has come up to this standard through clearing all obstacles on its path. At the beginning of the 19th century the villages in Mahaulpatha had to make a tedious journey to the Heeloya temple to attend to their religious observances and fulfillments.
Having given attention to this long felt need the Chief incumbent of Vidurapola Rathanajothi Thero of upcountry Amarapura chapter pioneered to build the present temple centered by the Banyan tree. In this respect the Thero was Co-operated by some of the most influenced people in the village. As a result the foundation stone for the temple was laid on 12th January 1902.
This temple has given shelter to a large number of priests since that time. In bringing up the temple to the present status the dedication and devotion made by most venerable Kandegedara Sumangala Thero, the present Chif priest belonging to up country Amarapura chapter Chief Sanganayaka for Uva Wellassa deserves immense praise. The Chief priest and the other Buddhist monks who resided in the temple guided the people intelligently and energetically.
